Call to Meeting October 2008

Annual General Meeting -
April 2008

Over 300 successful projects funded with over 1,400,000 USD in project grants since 1969.

World population is over 6 billion people, the majority of whom are women in developing countries who live in poverty. Gender disparities in economic power-sharing, in education, and access to adequate health care – all contribute to the oppression of these women. VGIF is meeting the seemingly insurmountable challenges of combating poverty and achieving gender equality in developing countries. Our donors are making a difference. VGIF has contributed in excess of $1.3 million USD to support nearly 300 projects worldwide to help... one women's group at a time... alleviate these problems.

Project 1714-Machik

Machik - Tibet
(Shenpen Fund)

Chungba Primary School

Funded 2003 & 2005

Until recently, there were no educational facilities for poor mountain children living in the central plateau of Tibet. The Shenpen Fund project established a fully functioning boarding school in the Tibetan village of Chungba for 210 children age 7-12 with the unprecedented school population requirement of 50% girls. Shenpen applied to VGIF for a grant to purchase warm clothing and blankets to combat harsh winter weather as there was not enough money for heaters in the new school. Local tailors volunteered to make two sets of clothing in traditional Tibetan style called “chubas ” for each of the 245 children at the Chungba School: a thick winter set and a second set in lighter materials. There was enough money left over to provide shoes, boots, hats, and mittens.

In a subsequent appeal, VGIF funded the building of a library facility for the school (Project Grant 2192). A large room was selected and cleared. Bookshelves were constructed and polished. Tibetan, Chinese and English language books were purchased. The subject areas covered were Tibetan (poetry, grammar, spelling, literature, history, life stories), Chinese (science, math, history, literature), English (fiction, science, math, grammar). Also purchased were DVDs, CDs, maps, posters and other useful learning aids. The library opened in September 2005.

Tibetan students earn honors and scholarships (2008)

The very first graduating class of the Chungba Primary School swept the final exams, placing first in all subjects and taking top honors across Litang County. In recognition of this achievement, the Litang County Education Bureau has announced a special award for the school.

The Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture Education Bureau has offered a special scholarship for the top three Chungba students to attend the Dartsedo Middle School this fall.
