Ways to Give

The Virginia Gildersleeve International Fund provides a variety of giving opportunities. Whether it is a modest annual donation or an estate gift, careful planning can help maximize the advantages to you, the donor, and to VGIF.

Through planning with VGIF and donor commitment, each donor can make a difference in the future of women and children around the world. Since the The Virginia Gildersleeve International Fund qualifies as a public charity under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, a gift to VGIF is deductible on US federal and state income tax returns as a charitable contribution to the maximum extent permitted by law.

Giving can take a variety of forms.

Cash provides the most immediate gift and translates into instant use for project support or may be directed to VGIF’s several endowment funds. It provides current tax savings for the donor.

Appreciated securities or mutual funds are a wonderful alternative to cash gifts. If you have owned the shares for more than one year, you get double tax benefits of (1) a charitable deduction based on the fair market value of the securities and (2) the avoidance of capital gains taxes. A gift of securities may be put to work immediately or added to an endowment fund to help it grow for the future. ·

Matching gifts enable businesses to match employees’, family members,’ and retirees' personal gifts. This is an easy way to enhance the impact of your gift. Information on your company’s matching gift program is usually available at your Human Resources department.

Gifts in kind are tangible personal property gifts that can be an effective way to support the Virginia Gildersleeve International Fund. They may range from books to real estate to computer equipment, and may be given through an outright contribution or through a trust or bequest. Gifts in kind can be used by VGIF or sold. Special rules apply for reporting gifts of certain property. The responsibility for an official appraisal rests with the donor.

Estate gifts. Life income gifts - gift annuities, charitable lead trusts, charitable remainder trusts, IRAs and qualified retirement plans, gifts of life insurance, and bequests - all provide ways to donate through planned giving.

VGIF Leadership Societies

The Virginia Gildersleeve International fund has established leadership societies to recognize exemplary giving by a single donor or an organization. The “VGIF Leadership Societies” are composed of individuals and organizations that provide exceptional, forward-looking support each year.

There are three VGIF Leadership Societies.

VGIF Founders - visionary donors who make a particularly generous gift to VGIF through their estate plans. With the support of VGIF’s professional financial and legal counsel, individuals may designate VGIF as a beneficiary of their estate.

VGIF Leaders – for-ward-looking donors who give $2,500 or more annually.

VGIF Ambassadors - donors who make a commitment to assist VGIF’s mission with a gift of $1,000 or more a year.
