Successful VGIF Workshop for NGOs at CSW - Repeat Performance after Dinner at April 15 VGIF Meeting!

While a snowstorm blanketed New York City on March 8, VGIF, in partnership with the International Federation of Women Lawyers, conducted a highly successful workshop for NGOs during the Commission on the Status of Women sessions. Entitled "Advancing the Millennium Development Goals through Funding and Advocacy for Women," it attracted an overflow crowd. All seats were occupied and all available space was taken by standees, with even a few having chosen to view the event from the floor.

Fay Kittleson, who chaired the program, opened with an overview of how VGIF was addressing the MDGs. After a brief summary by Virginia Maynard of VGIF's founding and early years, Fay continued with current information on membership, project grants, and application procedures. Martha Beck, Project Director of the Working Group on Girls, Cameroon, was in the audience and reported on her VGIF-funded project, which personalized the subject wonderfully.

The highlight of the program was a PowerPoint presentation prepared by Louise McLeod and narrated by Fay. It included photos of eight recent projects, each visually introduced with a slide giving the name of the country, project, and brief description. Before reporting on the last slide, which involved the Uganda Gender Rights project, Fay called on the Women Lawyers' representative, Johanna Sterbin, who spoke about that organization's role in advocacy and tied it in with three other VGIF-funded grants dealing with legal issues.

The program ended with a too brief Q & A period and much applause.

VGIF Continues Intern Relationship with Barnard College

As many of you know, VGIF has had a unique connection with Barnard College through Virginia Gildersleeve who was the Dean of Barnard from 1911-1947. We have happily continued this relationship via collaboration with the College's Office of Career Development. Through the participation in periodic Community Service and Career Fairs offered by Barnard/Columbia, we have had the benefit of establishing intern relationships with four students from Barnard who have assisted with a wide variety of projects in the VGIF office. These projects have ranged from re-organizing our entire grant history on to a new database to extensive work with administering and processing project grant requests as well as completed proposals. Other assignments have included: writing scripts for PowerPoint presentations and summaries of project grants for the VG Update; compiling merge lists for critical documents; researching international women's groups on the web; and assisting in the recent CSW workshop at the UN.

Beyond the practical application of the work hours, I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know each one of these bright, capable, and responsible young women - Lyudmila (Mila) Gorokhovich, Elizabeth (Liz) Moore, Maria Gibson and Zoe Kelly-Nacht. All have come to the position very interested in the cause of women and children throughout the world and I have been extremely impressed with the level of commitment, caring and enthusiasm they have brought to their work with VGIF. I am hopeful that we will be able to continue to attract interns of this same high quality to our program which is of mutual benefit to them and to VGIF.
