Actions from the Mid-Year Board Meeting |
Mary Grefe, AAUW Past President and AAUW Educational Foundation Past President, facilitated an in-depth discussion about the role of the VGIF Board on Saturday morning, October 29. We learned about OUR OBLIGATIONS AS BOARD MEMBERS and shared ideas regarding our effectiveness in executing the mission of VGIF - providing grants worldwide to improve the lives of women and children by funding projects for educational activities, leadership training, community development, and the advancement of understanding and cooperation among women.
VGIF President Barbara Carey began the Board meeting with definitions of NEW COMMITTEES which the Board approved. The Special Committee for Marketing, with Jack Young as convener, will replace the Marketing Analysis Committee. Louise McLeod will convene the Special Committee for Communications Management that replaces the Media and Communications Manager position and the Web Site Special Committee. She will also convene the Special Committee for Emergency Resources that combines the Crisis Management and Off Site Record Storage Special Committees. The Board also approved appointments to the Finance, Global Network, On Site and Project Grants Previewers committees and a new Pro Bono Counsel.
DATES FOR 2006 VGIF meetings are: Annual Meeting, April 28-29; and Mid-Year Meeting, October 27-28. The 40th Anniversary Annual Meeting will take place on April 24-25, 2009! Planning for an appropriate observance will begin at the 2006 Annual Meeting and volunteers for that committee are welcome.
JANUARY DEADLINES include: 7 - VG Update; 10 - suggested leaders to the Nominating Committee;16 - Strategic Plan Updates and Constitution and Bylaws amendments.
VGIF DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE Convener Maggie Ford reported that planning is taking place for a "Ways to Give" brochure, annual report and case statement. The Board approved in principle the establishment of the Central and South American Regional Endowment. Guidelines will be submitted to the April Board meeting for approval.
VGIF MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE Convener Fay Weber announced plans for VGIF DISPLAYS AND PRESENTATIONS at AAUW regional meetings in the spring,at the California state convention, and other state conventions where VGIF has members.
VGIF PROJECT GRANTS COMMITTEE Convener Carrie Gallagher announced that we had received 268 grant applications by October 28. Since the November 1 deadline is passed this process is closed for 2006 grants. The new application forms for 2007 grants will be available in the spring.
VGIF UNITED NATIONS Representatives Convener Leslie Wright reported that this committee intends to raise the visibility of VGIF at the UN. The team includes Virginia Maynard, Fay Kittelson and Jackie Woods. They have sent an introductory letter and brochure to the 191 ambassadors. VGIF representatives will participate in 2006 meetings of the Commission on the Status of Women and are members of the NGO Committee on the Status of Women and the NGO Committee on UNIFEM. In the future they hope to bring the voice of VGIF beneficiaries to the UN.
VGIF Past President Virginia Maynard maintains VGIF PROJECT GRANTS HISTORY. She reported that this information is current except for some gaps in grant outcomes.
VGIF Crisis Management Committee Convener Louise McLeod submitted the final report of the committee. The VGIF Secretary will maintain the CRISIS MANUALS.
VGIF Connections Committee Convener Jackie Shahzahdi is developing a list of PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS that VGIF can use for referrals. Suggestions are welcome.
