You Are Invited to the VGIF Annual Meeting!
Plan now to attend the VGIF Annual Meeting at the VGIF Office in New York City on April 27-28, 2007. Sit in on VGIF committee meetings on Friday morning and then enjoy a reception, dinner and international program on Friday evening while networking with international advocates. You are welcome to observe the VGIF Board meeting on Saturday morning, share lunch with Board members and guests, and attend the Annual Meeting to learn about successful project grant recipients, hear reports from committee conveners and meet new VGIF Board members. As a member in good standing you may vote on elections and bylaws amendments at the Annual Meeting.

VGIF President Barbara Carey invites all contributing members to these meetings. She encourages those interested in becoming involved in the work of the organization to participate. The working committees are lively and stimulating, reflecting the firm commitment we all have to the much needed work that VGIF-funded projects accomplish for those in need.

We look forward to seeing you in New York!

VGIF Mourns the Passing of Margaret Maxwell
Rosemary Everett, Chair of the Australian Group VGIF, notified us of the death of Margaret Maxwell on February 1 at the age of 93. This means VGIF has lost one of the stalwarts of VGIF in Australia and a very supportive former VGIF Board member who joined VGIF in 1979. Margaret's service to VGIF included: Board of Directors 1987-1993, 1995-2002; Membership Committee 1984-1990; and Global Network 1993-1999. Those of us who worked directly with Margaret or who met her at IFUW meetings and in our travels will miss her greatly.

Several members of VGIF and members of the Australian Federation of University Women attended Margaret's memorial service. Margaret's son James gave the eulogy and said his mother had three passions - IFUW, VGIF and her church. She was engaged in her various activies until her death from cancer.

You may contact Margaret's son, James Maxwell at 23 Attunga Street, Double Bay, NSW 2028, Australia.

Project Five - O Launches Book on Its History
"Empowering Women Worldwide", a book about the history of Project Five - O, was launched on 24 February 2007 in New York. It describes the special partnership of the five major international women's organizations and their endeavors in helping disadvantaged women in developing countries receive education and training and become economically empowered. VGIF has funded several Five - O projects including the very first project in Calcutta, India. VGIF helped fund this initial project, and a current member of the VGIF Board is involved with it now!

Over the past 25 years, the five organizations - International Federation of Business and Professional Women, the International Council of Women, the International Federation of University Women, Soroptimist International and Zonta International, have raised funds and initiated basic learning skills and vocational projects in more than 20 developing countries managed by their local membership. Many of the projects start with basic literacy but the diversity of knowledge and skills they provide has had a positive influence on the lives of women and girls and an impact that has resonated through whole communities with women's families also being beneficiaries. "Empowering Women Worldwide" tells the story of these women.
