Membership Committee Report on AAUW Phoenix and IFUW Manchester Meetings |
At the AAUW national convention held in Phoenix, AZ the end of June 2007, VGIF had a presence on several fronts. On Saturday, June 30, 2007 a breakfast session was held where Board members were introduced and a very brief history and explanation of VGIF’s mission was given. On Sunday morning our President, Barbara Carey, gave a brief presentation about VGIF at the International Forum breakfast.
On Monday, July 2, 2007, six of our members presented a workshop entitled “VGIF in the World: Getting US Involved”. The workshop was intended for attendees who were interested in active involvement in improving the status of women and girls worldwide. The workshop panel presented five diverse VGIF projects from around the world; the need and process for the On-Site program using volunteers to visit projects overseas; our United Nations connection; and demonstration of the Internet and other electronic resources to further the mission and purposes of VGIF.
From Friday June 29 through Monday July 2 the Membership Committee, the Executive Secretary and other active VGIF members attending the Convention staffed a VGIF booth in the exhibit hall where our brochures, VG Updates, posters and other materials were available for Convention attendees. There was also a constant laptop presentation on display. Ten new contributing members joined the ranks of VGIF and 15 “old” members renewed. Between these contributions, pin sales and passing the hat at the VGIF breakfast, over $2,400 was collected for our project grants.
August 2007 found VGIF on the road to Manchester, England to attend the International Federation of University Women Trienniel Conference. The Executive Secretary and Membership Convener staffed a VGIF information table with the help of other VGIF members from all around the world who were attending the meeting. Two luncheons were held, one on Saturday, August 11 where 100 women attended, and Monday, August 13 where 200 were in attendance. At the luncheons, there was an excellent PowerPoint presentation; introductory remarks by the Membership Convener; brief history of VGIF presented by our President, Barbara Carey; a panel discussion moderated by Fay Weber, which included Board members Eileen Menton, Louise McLeod, Jackie Shahzadi, and Executive Secretary Fay Kittelson. Raffle tickets were also sold all week and Joy Dunsheath, of New Zealand, was the lucky winner receiving a dinner for two at the Malmaison Manchester Restaurant. Seventeen new contributing members were obtained and the same number renewed. With memberships, pin sales, credit card and “pass the hat” contributions over $4,000 was raised for project grants.
