Description
For a Public Leadership Workshop Program designed to get women directly involved in public policy development, campaigns, and politics as organizers, workers and candidates. Other sponsoring organizations, in addition to KAW, included Korean Women’s Development Institute, Korean Women’s Organization, and Korean League of Women Voters.
Update
Over 200 women applied and 100 were accepted, those who were considering running in local elections. Over 70% of the participants were college educated, and most were in their 40’s and 50’s. Nine three-day workshops were held in various cities over a six-month period. 98% of the participants evaluated the workshops as very useful or useful and 90% suggested additional training within six months or a year. There was agreement that Korean women in politics are disadvantaged because of their gender, but more participants were “positive to the idea that Korean society will open itself more to the participation of women, especially in local government.”
