# 3805      2009 Women's Center
GEORGIA
Keywords:
Domestic Violence
Description
In Georgia, nearly 40 percent of pregnant women experience domestic violence. The Women’s Center seeks to increase awareness of the problem and end domestic violence. They will train 60 physicians and nurses from three hospitals around Tbilisi to effectively screen for gender-based violence. This program will offer screening tools for four, free-of-charge, pre-natal visits. In addition, there will also be a workshop at three universities on prevention of gender-based violence, reaching 60 people. Another university group of ten community educators will take classes on this issue. The funds are budgeted toward training medical staff, university students, and a one-week workshop.
Update
Virtually every woman visits some sort of health professional at some point in their life. The health care sector could be a very important part of the help-seeking process for women experiencing violence. They may seek medical help for the consequences of domestic violence. Health professionals will most often encounter survivors of domestic violence: gynecologists, psychiatrists, cardiologists, pediatricians, neurologists, family doctors. The goal of this project was to train medical professionals to enhance their skills to effectively screen gender-based violence. Three trainings for 60 medical persons were held along with a training session for university students and community educators. Posters and booklets were produced and distributed outlining: conflict resolution skills, working towards a non-violent world, violence and care response, sexual harassment at schools, health sector response, and implementation of skills and strategies. A screening model to determine domestic violence was devised. Routine screening showed that 6/7 victims were pregnant, 15% experienced beating/threats from a family member during pregnancy, 19% were terrorized by husbands, 6% were abused by mother-in-laws. Analysis shows that pregnant women experiencing domestic violence have a higher risk of impending abortion, hypertensive syndrome during pregrancy, urinary tract infections, intrauterine growth retardation. Newborns have lower birth weight, size and gestational age. Most physicians do not routinely screen for abuse during prenatal visits. A special manual was using for training physicians outlining: who should be trained; what should they ask; who should be asked; when should inquiry not occur; how to document the abuse; follow up; creation of a safety plan for the victims. Many victims will talk about their experiences if asked in a sensitive and empathetic way. However some victims may be reluctant due to: shame, fear, finanancial issues, concerns about immigration status, lack of trust.
